He was dying the way men who have been running from something for twenty-five years tend to die: faster than expected, heavier than they thought they would feel about it.
Phineas Fay Clanton. Phin. The last of the Cowboys, which is what they were called in the territory in those years - a specific thing, Cowboys, not a generic descriptor but an organization with geography and membership and a body count attached to it. I knew the count. I had been in this territory when they were operating. I knew the Mexican border communities they had hit. I knew the names that were owed.
My necromantic sense found his threshold the way it finds any threshold: not like sight, not like sound, but like the quality of a room’s pressure changing when a window opens. He was a man who had been carrying the dead for a long time. The Earp business, the aftermath, twenty-five years of trying to outlive the reputation - the dead he had accumulated in that time were not nothing, and they called to me in the specific way that the unresolved dead call: insistently, without urgency, the way a debt accumulates interest without making any sound.
I had not planned this. I want to be honest about that because honesty here matters. I went to see what the calling was. I found an old man in a bed in 1906 Tucson who was about to resolve his obligations to the living world in the most final possible way, and whose accumulated dead were already starting the conversation with me about what came next.
He was a person. I am capable of observing this without it eliminating the sentence. He had a voice, a history, opinions about his own conduct that were not purely self-serving - I could feel the shape of his self-understanding through the dead the way you can sometimes feel through a medium what the original looked like. He had not thought of himself as a predator. He had thought of himself as a man operating in conditions that did not leave much room for another way of being. This is the thought of nearly every man I have met who has organized other people’s deaths for his own benefit. It is never entirely wrong and it is never the whole truth.
The binding formed while I was still deciding whether I intended it.
That is not an excuse. I intend every binding I make; they are not accidents. But there is a difference between sitting down with an intention and arriving at one through the process of presence, and this was the second kind. I was in the room with the weight of what he had done and the weight of the dead he had accumulated and the weight of the communities they had taken from, and the sentence organized itself around all of that before I had finished forming it into a deliberate decision.
He serves. That is the sentence. The Cowboys preyed on the Mexican border communities that are under my oath - not all of them, not systematically, but enough, and specifically enough, and the families those communities descend from are still in this desert. He answers the door. He maintains the house. He receives visitors at the Montebella home on behalf of the people whose dead he helped create.
I maintain him. I am not cruel about it. A binding that is also a torture is a different sentence than the one I imposed, and I am precise about what I impose. He is maintained. The warmth that would make the maintenance comfortable - the warmth of being known, of being spoken to, of having the sentence acknowledged and discussed - is withheld. That withholding is the sentence. He has understood this, I think, for decades. He does not speak of it. I do not explain it.
The skull and the door: Cortes in glass above the shrine, Phin answering the threshold below. Both held. Both doing the work of what they left undone when they were free to leave it undone.
Neither of us opens that conversation about what it means.
