A vampire I had not catalogued came into my territory without introduction and proceeded to handle a jinn problem with evident competence but no visible awareness that he was handling it in someone else’s house.
Standing Deer brought him to me. This is the proper way to do it - you do not walk into the Elder’s awareness unannounced if you can help it, and if you cannot help it you send your voucher ahead. Standing Deer vouched. Standing Deer’s voucher means something; he has been operating in this territory long enough that his judgment is not untested. I listened to the voucher.
Then I listened to Warren Sterling, which is a different thing.
He speaks with the specific cadence of a man who is accustomed to being the most capable person in the room. I know this cadence; I have been alive long enough to have met most of its variations. The good version of it - the version I was hearing - sounds like competence, like a person who has done the relevant things enough times that the explanation is clean. The bad version sounds like certainty. Warren Sterling’s version was close to the good one, with traces of the bad one in the structure of how he talked about the people he worked with. Not dismissive. Something subtler: a tendency to describe other people’s situations as problems to be solved and his own contribution as the solving.
He had freed someone. He seemed to think this was the end of the obligation.
This is a perspective I understand with some sympathy, because it is the perspective of someone who has not yet been in a position where freeing someone opens more obligations than it closes. You free the person; you have done the generous thing; the account should close. The logic is sound if the world is a transaction. The world is not a transaction. The world is more like my dead - what you do for it tends to stay in the accounting longer than you anticipated, and the interest is not always monetary.
He was not cruel. His intentions were correct in the way intentions can be correct without being complete. His heart, as far as I could read the shape of it through the dead his actions had moved in my territory, was not built for malice. It was built for solving, which is not the same thing as malice - and just as far from wisdom.
I considered what Standing Deer’s voucher was actually certifying. Not character - Standing Deer does not deal in character assessments; he deals in competency and reliability. Warren Sterling was competent and reliable. Those were the terms of the voucher.
I loaned Standing Deer.
This requires explanation, because it looks like help and it is not exactly help. It is observation through an operational lens. I loan Standing Deer to things I want to understand from the inside - not to surveil, not to control, but because Standing Deer is a good lens. He sees clearly and reports honestly and his reports are structured in a way that gives me information I cannot get from the outside.
Whatever Warren is building, I will know it from within it. That is not a threat. That is the way I have administered this territory for a century: not through direct force but through the cultivation of understanding. You cannot govern what you do not know. And the people who come into my territory without understanding they have done so are the ones most worth knowing.
He seemed like an interesting problem. I lent him my best lens. We will see what he does with the view.
